The Spear in Sea of Thieves:
A New Weapon with Some Quirks
Season 15 of Sea of Thieves has introduced a new weapon: the Hunting Spear. This unique addition came with Phase 2 of Season 15 and brings new mechanics, commendations, and potential strategies for players to explore. However, as with any new feature, it's not without its quirks. In this guide, we’ll break down how the spears work, how to earn commendations, and whether they are worth the effort.
How to Obtain Hunting Spears
You can get Hunting Spears through multiple sources:
> Purchase from Hunter’s Call vendors at outposts and sea posts (though there's a frustrating limit of five per purchase).
> Find them in shipwrecks and on skeleton ships (each fleet ship drops one).
One odd limitation is that if you buy spears from a Hunter’s Call vendor at an outpost, the corresponding sea post vendor will be locked out from selling more. This means you’ll need to visit multiple locations to stock up.
Hunting Spear Commendations
There are three commendations under the Wild Seas category tied to the Hunting Spear:
1 - Hit Krakens or Megalodons with a spear (from your hand or a cannon).
2 - Hit rocks using the spear.
3 - Pierce enemy ships with the spear.
Completing all three will reward you with the Jack Jaws Throwing Knife. Additionally, in the next phase of Season 15, more commendations will be added, and finishing all Wild Seas commendations will unlock the Wild Seas Curse, which makes your pirate look shark-like.
Using the Hunting Spears
How They Work in Combat
> Spears disappear on impact when thrown at a crewmate or enemy.
> Blocking with a cutlass negates most of the damage.
> Spears fired into a ship’s hull must be manually removed, and doing so creates a Tier 3 hole.
> If spears remain embedded, they can serve as a damage delay strategy, preventing immediate repairs.
A key takeaway: removing spears from your ship is more damaging than enemy cannonballs, similar to pulling out an arrow from wood. This adds an interesting tactical element to naval combat.
Spears vs. Other Weapons
Despite being seemingly designed to hunt sea monsters, the spear doesn’t offer any significant advantage over traditional weapons like cannons or guns. In fact:
> Throwing a spear at a charging Megalodon doesn’t stop its attack.
> Damage output isn’t notably high.
> Daggers are faster and more efficient for PvP.
This raises the question—what exactly is the spear’s intended role? While it adds some novelty to naval battles, its effectiveness remains questionable.
How to Maximize Your Spears
Given the cooldown for repurchasing spears, a server hop (scuttling and joining a new server) may be the best way to refresh stock quickly. If you plan on grinding commendations, consider:
> Hitting multiple outposts and sea posts to buy as many spears as possible.
> Stocking up in advance before tackling Megalodon-related commendations.
> Experimenting with ship combat tactics to see if spears can be leveraged strategically.
Final Thoughts:
Is the Hunting Spear Worth It?
The Hunting Spear is a fun, albeit somewhat impractical, addition to Sea of Thieves. While it adds new commendations and strategies, its damage output and mechanics feel underwhelming. Hopefully, Rare will refine its functionality in future updates.
For now, if you’re looking to 100% complete your commendations or experiment with new ship strategies, it’s worth giving the spear a shot. Otherwise, stick to cannons, daggers, and traditional weapons for the best combat efficiency.
